There is a great free WordPress plug-in that will check your website for hidden links (of course that does not help if your theme offers poor onpage SEO). The plugin is called TAC and will scan your blog within seconds and alert you in case hidden links are found. Scanning your blog with TAC is a great thing to do, however, it won't help optimizing your blog for search engines. If you are serious you might want to think about getting a paid WordPress theme. Those themes are optimized and free of hidden links, because those templates are not created for the sake of getting backlinks, but to make money selling them.

You do not only have to find out about your competitors links, you also need to know exactly who is linking to you and which anchor texts are being used. Checking the anchors of your backlinks has NEVER been so important than now after Google Penguin. In case you have too many of the same anchors you will run into a Google penalty!
November 2011 - The End Of Yahoo Siteexplorer - However, Ahrefs Gives Access To Even More Data
Until November 2011 Yahoo Site Explorer was available to anyone free of charge and one was free to check backlinks pointing to any domain. But Yahoo Site Explorer has been discontinued and now there is no free tool that offers a backlink check. The only tool that comes with this option and also offering tons of other functions to check your website's ranks and backlinks, linkloss, link gain anchors and so much more is Ahrefs.
The only downside: It is not free. The cheapest option is getting a basic membership for $49. But well... it is definitely worth the cost and it is one of those essential tools you should not be without. So if there is any way you can afford $49... do it! I can assure you that you will be glad you joined this site and you will profit SO MUCH from the detailed reports.
Ahrefs Main Features
1.New And Lost Link Check By Date
One of the most important features is the ability to check for new and lost backlinks by date. This option will allow you to determine which links actually helped your rankings increase or the opposite. You can also use it to learn about your competitors link practices. Which link helped them to increase rankings? This information is really valuable.
2. Details On Anchor Text Used
Anchor text. Now this feature is now more important than ever before after the latest Penguin update. To determine "unnatural links" Google now uses anchor text data to evaluate whether links are unnatural or not. You need a good mixture of links like brandname, plain url, variations of keywords etc. to avoid any penalties and to gain rankings. Hrefs.com anchor text tool will exactly show you which anchor texts are used on sites linking back to you. By getting access to this data you will be able to determine which anchor texts should be used in your future campaigns.

3. Overview of Rankings Including Gain And Loss
Get an instant overview of all keywords your domain ranks for in Google. Plus you will also see whether you rankings improved or declined. To my surprise I noticed several keywords ranking good in Google and I never built any backlinks to them. With the help of this information I was able to increase rankings for those particular keywords even more and increase website traffic.
